La Malinche was born around 1500 in a region now known as Veracruz, Mexico.  She became a slave to the Mayan lords in Tabasco.  In 1519, Hernán Cortés received her as a gift from the Mayans, along with 19 other enslaved women.  La Malinche went on to become a translator and advisor to Cortés and the mother of his son, Martin.  Without the help of La Malinche, Cortés invasion of the Aztec empire would probably have failed.
