Description
A visit to Magdalena today reflects the culture of a small town in Sonora, MX as it has been for centuries. On this day-long tour we will stop at the village of San Ignacio to visit the Mision San Ignacio de Caborica, established as a visita in 1687, and became the most important of Kino missions over time. Climb the bell tower, appreciate the flying buttresses, and enjoy meeting the wonderful townspeople. We'll take time to stroll around the peaceful plaza. San Ignacio is famous for its quince trees producing the famous membrillo preserve; perhaps you'll have the opportunity to buy some there.
On to the picturesque main plaza of Magdalena containing Father Kino’s shrine, the church of Santa Maria Magdalena, and the chapel with the venerated statue of San Francisco Xavier. Walk to the nearby Municipal Palace to view the murals depicting the history of Mexico. There we'll be met by the Head of Tourism and maybe the Mayor. You'll have time to visit the shops, candy vendors, and bakeries surrounding the plaza. We'll enjoy an authentic Sonoran comida, included in your fee.
This tour is led by Father Vicente Lopez, who leads the Patronato de Kino de Tucson, a non-profit organization enriching and promoting the life teachings of Eusebio Francisco Kino, a Jesuit Missionary, seeking his canonization. Transportation is included from Tubac, AZ.
