Wednesday, April 29, 2026: Amerind Museum Tour
Join us for a private two hour docent-led tour of this extraordinary museum, art gallery, and research center dedicated to archaeology, Indigenous cultures, and western art. The Amerind Museum (https://www.amerind.org/) is located in Dragoon, Arizona and is surrounded by the spectacular boulders of Texas Canyon.
Bring your own picnic lunch to be enjoyed at the picnic grounds amongst the amazing boulders of Texas Canyon on site. After everyone's finished lunch, the Gallery and Gift Shop will be open for our casual enjoyment. The exhibit that will be showing in the Gallery, among their permanent world-class collection, is TAOSOAN GLASS: The Art of Ira Lujan. Ira Lujan was introduced to glass blowing in Taos, New Mexico during the summer of 2000. He went on to begin an apprenticeship with the Native American Glass Artist Tony Jojola. He also studied under Preston Singletary at Pilchuck Glass School during the summers of 2006, 2009. He also studied under Pole Turners in 2012, 2013, 2014. Working with Jojola and Singletary brought forth the unique possibilities of incorporating Native themes and influences with ancient techniques of glass blowing. Today Lujan’s work is highly influenced by everyday scenes of Classic Native American life. "Ever since I was young I believe glass was a part of me. My first memories as a young boy are hiking with my grandfather on the Taos Pueblo Reservation and finding arrow points chipped from obsidian. I would say look what I found an arrowhead, he would laugh and say that’s just glass. I am from Taos Pueblo and Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo the northern Pueblos of New Mexico. But I grew up and went to school in Albuquerque. After high school I moved to Eugene Oregon for a short time. There is where I discovered Glass Blowing at the Eugene Glass School. When I returned to New Mexico I enrolled in art class in Taos. One of these classes was Glass Blowing taught by Tony Jojola a Native American from Isleta Pueblo. In Taos, surrounded by all the teachings of the arts, is where I realized glass would be my vision quest for this life."
We will leave once everyone has finished in the Gallery and Gift Shop, no later than 3:00pm. If you aren't interested in the Gift Shop you can take the opportunity to walk around the beautiful grounds or take a nap under a cottonwood tree!
