Hernández explores our country’s ongoing debate about who belongs, and provides fresh ways of thinking about citizenship, exploring the challenging questions of belonging, identity, and the intricate immigrant experience in America.
In this evocative blend of memoir, history, and cultural reporting, Hernández interrogates the very concept of American citizenship. Braiding together her own family’s stories—with a mother from Colombia and a father who was a political refugee from Cuba—she explores how the laws and language we use to define belonging often serve to exclude. From the personal "borderlands of citizenship" to the national debate on identity, this book is an urgent, necessary account of what it truly means to be American today. Daisy Hernández is an Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Northwestern University and the author of the acclaimed memoir A Cup of Water Under My Bed and The Kissing Bug, which won the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award. Her work deeply explores the intersections of race, immigration, and family.
"The most comprehensive book on citizenship/immigration I've ever read. Daisy Hernández marvelously blends her family's story with the story of citizenship itself. In her pen, everything is illuminated to a point in which we can understand our present moment better. This book is a must-read!" — Javier Zamora, New York Times bestselling author of Solito
Daisy joined us at our BCA author signing table during this year's Tucson Festival of Books, where she was a huge hit, both on the big author panels and at our well-attended booth. She is a strong supporter of BCA, and we are so grateful that she'll be joining us.
